Emerging

It's been a little over a week since the days filled with packing, loading a truck, cleaning a house, and moving to my parents, and I am just now starting to feel up to checking email, returning phone calls, and venturing out. This move felt more exhausting than other (several other!) moves we've had and I needed a break. Andrew is also out of town for ten days right now, so that's probably added to my hermit-ness.
With our activities of late, I haven't been reading very much, and I've noticed. Reading a good book helps to calm me as I lie down with my kids at night, and keeps me from wasting time staying up late watching tv. I haven't been able to figure out the right book for my mood though, but tonight I just found it!
I've had this book sitting in my house for a while, but hadn't picked it up yet. It almost made its way into one of the 20 or so book boxes we packed, but for some reason I kept it out. And tonight I remembered it and began to read. As I nursed Annie to sleep I made it through the first 25 pages, and already I feel peace seeping into my soul. This was just what I was looking for! It is called Mitten Strings For God: Reflections for Mothers in a Hurry by Katrina Kenison and I have a feeling this is one I'll be going back to several times over the years. It reminds me of one of my most favorite books of all time, Gift From the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh which I try to read at least once a year.
A side-note: if you haven't already been there, goodreads is a fun site for finding and sharing great book recommendations.
Well, I'm going to get back to reading, and in a little while I will try to return one or two of the many emails that sit unanswered in my inbox...if I can pull myself away from the book. Here's wishing you a peaceful evening.

Have you read Pollyanna before? I watched the movie several times when I was growing up, but hadn't read the book until today. It was such a wonderful read for me - just the perspective I needed to remember to be glad.

I actually never have, and I even own the book! Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to pick it up once I unpack.

Good job Becca! I'm glad you are taking a couple of minutes for yourself! After watching conference this past weekend, I defiantly have a renewed sense of how important it is to try and take a little time out of the day to breath and do something that lets you relax. Proud of you!

How hard to have Andrew away for so long! I have been struggling with Josh's job because he keeps having to travel on 3-4 day trips. I should stop complaining! Thanks for the tip on the book. It sounds like a good one. I have never heard of it, so I'm excited to try it out!

Thanks for the recommendation! I really NEED to get reading more. But I don't want to waste my time with some ol' book- so I appreciate the suggestion. I'm currently finishing up a "love and Logic" book right now, hoping my kids make it through life despite my faulty mothering...

so I finished the "these is my words" remember, well, I read the other two to the series and I liked all of them, though the first one, though is sad, I think is a good book and worth reading! So if you ever want to read them, there you go. Thanks for the web site--I need good books to read. They have really helped me this year so much since I started reading again in Jan for the first time really for pleasure since High school !!! pretty sad I know! Anyway, That's awesome you read when your putting your kids to sleep? do you have a little light or do the kids not mind the light on? Let me know how you do it because that is driving me crazy, becasue I lay next to Harrison to go to bed and the longer it takes, I start getting uptight, when it isn't his fault I start to get impatient. I think a book would help! Hang in there!!!

Hey Laura, I didn't realize there were more books to that series. Now I'll have to check it out. I think I can handle the sad book if there is something that comes after!
When I put my kids to bed, we usually have the door cracked a bit and the hall light on, or a closet light with the door opened a little...something that is just enough light for me to read, but still a dim atmosphere. I get impatient with bedtime too if I'm not reading, so it's helped!
